About Rotary :
What is Rotary?
Rotary International is a world-wide service organisation with 1.2 million enthusiastic volunteers who enjoy helping those who are less
fortunate. Rotarians freely give their time to make a difference to the lives of so many.
Rotary has many global humanitarian projects to assist with famine
relief, disease, disasters, homelessness and lack of education. In
particular, Rotary is the world’s foremost agent in the eradication
of Polio through its campaign, “Make Polio History”.
Because we are a truly global organisation, based in over 200
countries, we can reach people in need quickly when disaster strikes
such as the recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile.
There are many aspects to Rotary and you can find out much more on
the
Rotary International
website.

History
The Rotary Club was founded in 1905 by a lawyer, Paul Harris, in
Chicago. He wanted to form a club to promote fellowship amongst the
members of the business community and invited three of his friends
to join. Many new members soon joined and it became the practice to
rotate the meetings between each member’s premises (hence the name
“Rotary Club” and depicted as a wheel).
In the early years it focussed on helping local families in need by
providing food but now it provides aid on a global basis.
The club continued to grow rapidly and spread beyond America,
reaching Britain in 1914 when “Rotary International in Britain and
Ireland” was formed. You can read much more about Rotary in Great Britain
and Ireland on the
RIBI website.
Nowadays there are 33,000 Rotary clubs worldwide with 1,850 clubs here in RIBI.
Who joins Rotary?
Men and women who wish to give some of their time and talents
in the service of helping others join the fellowship of Rotary.
Members promote high ethical standards and encourage goodwill and peace in the world.
Rotary clubs have no political or religious affiliations and are open to all races and cultures.
The benefits of membership
Rotarians get the satisfaction of giving something back to the
community and enjoy the fellowship of other Rotarians in their clubs
and other clubs the world over. It is a huge opportunity to network
and make friends both socially and in business.
The object of Rotary
The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service
as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and
foster:-
The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition
of the worthiness of all useful occupations and the dignifying of
each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal,
business and community life;
The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace
through a world fellowship of business and professional persons
united in the ideal of service.
- The Rotary “Four-way Test”
The “Four-way
Test” is the cornerstone of a Rotarian’s conduct in
business, personal and Rotary life: In all actions we ask ourselves :-
Is it the truth?
Is it fair to all concerned?
Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
